regarding studying the chrp


Could any one advise me or direct me to a link or website where i can obtain some information or a list of SME enterprises

    Welcome to Communities.

    Both I and many other colleagues are happy to do our very best to help you, but suggest you need to say more about exactly what you're wanting to know about SMEs. 

    Moreover, the topic being a CHRP syllabus one, it seems to be about the composition and organisation of UK economic activity, which isn't exactly information that's at the fingertips of most people here.

    There are I believe government etc statistics that demonstrate that a big proportion of economic activity gets undertaken by SMEs, but, even classifying and listing them is an almost - impossible task, owing to their diversity, proliferation, impermanence, failure to fill in forms etc etc. I've been involved with local development agencies etc that tried to compile databases of SMEs, but don't think they ever managed that nearly as well as the commercial business directories.

    Government policy towards SMEs over the years has IMO been a total shambles, with constant upheaval and  nothing much being achieved and the present result a total mess. A lot of EU funding is supposed to be targeted at helping SMEs, but, on the ground, there seems to be little or no real or practical help for most of them.

    One beginning might be to define an SME and to outline their collective economic importance. But note that there are strong regional variations - I live in a very sparsely-populated area, where the majority of SMEs are farmers or land-based businesses. The composition of SMEs in a major city or even certain areas of it is going to be totally different. The 'jewellery quarter' of Birmingham or the rag trade along Cheetham Hill in Manchester are examples of local agglomerations of SMEs, where different ones congregate together as a central place or these particular goods or services and often trade amongst themselves or subcontract specialised production work amongst themselves.

    Local Chambers of Commerce attempt to bring SMEs together, but they're nothing like as thorough or effective a network as in other developed EU countries, such as the German Chambers of Commerce - IHK - network.

    SMEs impact upon the world of HR eg because most employees tend to work for small employers, most of whom have very rough and ready, if nonexistent HR knowledge and skills. Here, therefore, lies a very big problem   - for example, written statements of main terms of employment - supposed to be a statutory requirement, but how many SMEs know that, or bother to issue them? - I'd say about 20%, at the most. Trade Unions tend not to represent many employees of SMEs, for obvious logistical reasons, so all in all SME proprietors are at a grave disadvantage trying to comply with employment law etc etc and their employees can suffer greatly and needlessly because their employers can't or won't comply.

    Etc etc, but hope some of these ramblings help in your studies - would suggest asking your tutors and the CIPD Library for some reading lists and other pointers, too.
