Mark Beatson - Chief Economist 

Mark Beatson

Mark's role includes leading the CIPD’s respected labour market analysis and commentary, while also strengthening the CIPD’s ability to lead thinking and influence policy making across the whole spectrum of people management and workplace issues.

Prior to joining the CIPD, Mark was an economic consultant and for over 20 years worked as an economist in the Civil Service, latterly at Chief Economist/Director level, in a range of Government departments including the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS), the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and HM Treasury.

Charles Cotton – Performance and Reward Adviser, Reward 

Charles Cotton

Charles is the CIPD’s performance and reward adviser. He directs the Institute’s performance and reward research agenda. He has recently led research into: how employers can help improve their employees’ understanding of their personal finances; how front line managers make and communicate reward decisions to their employees; how employers manage the risks around reward; how private sector employers can build the business case for workplace pensions; how employees form their attitudes to pay; and how the annual pay review process can become more strategic. He is also responsible for the CIPD’s public policy reward work and has given evidence to select committees on banking pay, redundancy awards as well as responding to various consultations, such as on pensions, retirement and MPs’ expenses.

Gerwyn Davies - Labour Market Adviser 

Gerwyn Davies

Gerwyn is the CIPD’s Public Policy Adviser for a wide range of labour market issues. With lead responsibility for welfare reform, migration and zero-hour contracts at the CIPD, Gerwyn has led and shaped the policy debate and achieved substantial national media coverage through various publications. These include Zero-hours contracts: myth and reality (2013) and The growth of EU labour: assessing the impact on the UK labour market (2014). In addition Gerwyn authors the institute’s high profile and influential quarterly Labour market outlook report. Gerwyn is an experienced labour market commentator, making regular appearances in the national media and on other public platforms, including several appearances before the House of Commons Work and Pensions select committee.

David D’Souza – Head of London 

David D’Souza

David is the CIPD’s Head of London. Recently described as “one of the UK’s most influential HR and workplace commentators”, he is a respected speaker and writer on progressive HR & business practice.

David has expertise on a wide range of areas, including organisational development, learning & development, talent and performance management, ethics, employee engagement and the future of work.

Prior to joining the CIPD, David worked as an independent Organisational Development Consultant, having held previous roles as Head of People Development at Metrobank and in various HR positions for an international FS firm.

Jonny Gifford - Research Adviser 

Jonny Gifford

Jonny is a Research Adviser at the CIPD, specialising in employee relations and engagement, but also with fingers in other pies, including CSR, diversity, leadership and organisational development. He joined the CIPD in 2012, with a varied career in researching employment and people management issues. Prior to joining he was Principal Researcher at Roffey Park Institute and before that, Research Fellow at the Institute for Employment Studies (IES). Jonny has an MA in Social Research and Comparative Labour Studies from Warwick University and a BA in Social Anthropology from Sussex University.

Laura Harrison – Director of People and Strategy 

Laura Harrison

Laura is the CIPD’s Strategy Director and has worked at the CIPD since February 2011. Her earlier career was spent at Aviva and in various consulting roles with Ernst & Young and PwC. 

Laura has particular interest in the future of work and HR, organisation development and change. She holds a first degree in Chemistry and postgraduate qualifications in Law and Tax.

Edward Houghton - Research Adviser, Human Capital and Metrics 

Edward Houghton

Edward is the CIPD's Research Adviser for Human Capital Metrics and Standards. He is responsible for leading the organisation's human capital research work stream exploring various aspects of human capital management, theory and practice; including the measurement and evaluation of the skills and knowledge of the workforce. He has a particular interest in the role of human capital in driving economic productivity, innovation and corporate social responsibility.

Before joining the CIPD in 2013 Edward completed a number of research roles in government and higher education. Most recently he was a Knowledge Transfer Associate at the University of Bristol leading an innovative knowledge exchange programme between the university and Barclays bank. Over 3 years he managed research investigating business culture, corporate social responsibility and community investment. In this role he specialised in qualitative and quantitative social research techniques and strategic project design, developing metrics for the organisation's flagship community investment programme in the UK. Prior to this Edward held a number of research analyst roles in regional and local government as well as the private sector, including at the East Midlands Development Agency, Leicester City Council and the Transport Research Laboratory.

Andy Lancaster – Head of Learning & Development 

Andy LancasterAndy has more than 25 years’ experience in learning and organisational development in commercial, technological and not-for-profit organisations and has also worked in a consultancy role.

As Head of Learning and Development Content at the CIPD Andy is responsible for professional development and learning products, digital content and qualifications for L&D, coaching and mentoring, management and leadership and business psychology.

Andy also plays a key role in leading the direction and delivery of the CIPD’s wider new vision for L&D. He was part of the team that developed CIPD’s new L&D qualifications, oversees the Leaders in Learning Network and is helping pioneer online digital learning at the Institute.

Andy has a Master’s Degree in Instructional Design and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (FCIPD), the Chartered Management Institute (FCMI) and the Learning and Performance Institute (FLPI). He regularly speaks at conferences, write articles on behalf of CIPD and is the co-author of the “Webinars Pocketbook”.

Claire McCartney - Research Adviser, Resourcing and Talent Planning 

Claire McCartneyClaire joined the CIPD in 2008. She is responsible for research exploring different aspects of effective talent management strategies and manages the Institute’s Resourcing and Talent Forum and the CIPD Employee Outlook tracker research. Claire specialises in resourcing, talent management and diversity. She has also conducted research into meaning and trust at work, age diversity and enterprise and has worked on a number of international projects. She is the author of several reports and articles and regularly presents at seminars and conferences. 

Prior to joining the CIPD, Claire was Principal Researcher at Roffey Park where she conducted research projects into a variety of topics including Roffey Park’s annual Management Agenda Survey, Work-Life Balance, Flexible Working, Employee Volunteering, Talent Management and Diversity. Claire has also worked with a range of clients on tailored research needs.

Dr Jill Miller – Research Adviser 

Jill Miller

Jill joined the CIPD in 2008 and her research covers a range of people management issues, having led on the CIPD’s 3-year research programme, Shaping the Future, examining the drivers of sustainable organisation performance. 

Jill is responsible for the CIPD’s HR Outlook survey which provides insight and thought leadership about HR at a strategic level. It compares the views of HR and non-HR leaders about how HR drives long term business performance (both now and in future) to provoke discussion and debate within the HR profession and drive leading-edge practice. 

Jill’s other current research focuses on how HR can help drive long-term performance in SMEs. Drawing on her career in smaller organisations, her case study work has highlighted some of the key people management challenges and opportunities faced at different stages of SME growth. Building on a strong research foundation, she is committed to developing practical guides and tools for those responsible for delivering excellent people management in SMEs.

Jill is also responsible for the CIPD’s annual Absence Management survey and strongly believes in the importance of promoting well-being, in particular resilience and good mental health.

Jill is a psychology graduate with a postgraduate masters and PhD in Management. Previously, Jill lectured at Reading University on International Human Resource Management.

Ruth Stuart - Lead Consultant, Strategic Projects 

Ruth Stuart

Ruth is the Lead Consultant for Strategic Projects at the CIPD, responsible for developing and delivering the CIPD's Profession for the Future strategy. She joined the CIPD in 2013 as Research Adviser for Learning and Development (L&D), focusing on the latest trends in L&D practice and transformational change.

Prior to joining the CIPD Ruth held a number of roles within Tesco plc in both specialist L&D and generalist HR roles. Most recently she worked within organisation development, leading capability development within the commercial business function. Prior to this she gained experience as an HR business partner and in international talent and leadership development. She holds a first degree in politics and modern history, an MA in Human Resource Management and is a Chartered member of the CIPD.

Rachel Suff - Public Policy Adviser, Employment Relations 

Rachel Suff

Rachel Suff joined the CIPD as a policy adviser in 2014 to increase the CIPD’s public policy profile and engage with politicians, civil servants, policy-makers and commentators to champion better work and working lives. An important part of her role is to ensure that the views of the profession inform CIPD policy thinking in ER areas such as health and well-being, employee engagement and employment relations. As well as developing policy on UK employment issues, she helps guide the CIPD’s thinking in relation to European developments affecting the world of work. Rachel is a qualified HR practitioner and researcher; her prior roles include working as a researcher/editor for XpertHR and as a senior policy adviser at Acas.

Sue Upton – Director of Members and Markets 

Sue Upton

Sue joined the CIPD in February 2000 and has held a variety of executive roles in Marketing, Communications, Membership and Professional Development, as well as a brief period as Interim MD. She now leads the Members and Markets Directorate which acts as the primary point of contact and service delivery for the CIPD’s members and other customers. This includes ensuring that the CIPD’s membership proposition meets the needs of its 135,000 members. 

Sue is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and is a Chartered Marketer.

Gill White – Director of Knowledge and Capability 

Gill White

Gill runs the CIPD’s ‘Leaders in Learning’ network and believes that leaders need to be learning catalysts and their learning experts should support, inspire and drive that agenda alongside them. 

Prior to the CIPD, Gill held a range of Head of Learning roles at companies including Vodafone and Xchanging. She also has a management background ranging from MD of a Leadership Consultancy to Regional Manager for Whitbread. 

Gill is one of just 1000 people in the UK to hold Chartered Director status, awarded by the Institute of Directors. Gill became a Fellow of the IOD in 2013 and has been mentoring other Chartered Directors for several years. Gill is also a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD.

Samantha Whittaker - Head of Editorial and Strategy Development 

Sam Whittaker

Sam is responsible for leading key strategic projects including the Profession for the Future strategy. She also has overall responsibility for CIPD’s content strategy, ensuring that the Institute’s research and thought leadership aligns with the organisation’s goals, building trust, respect and authority in the CIPD and its brands with a unique and differentiated voice on work, workforce and workplace issues. Prior to joining the CIPD in 2013 Sam held global leadership roles at multinational publishing companies including John Wiley & Sons, Palgrave Macmillan, Thomson and McGraw-Hill. She has acted as consultant to organisations including the OECD and is a Visiting Lecturer at Oxford Brookes University. Sam holds a first degree in English & Philosophy.

Ben Willmott - Head of Public Policy 

Ben Willmott

Ben leads the CIPD’s Public Policy team, which works to inform and shape debate, government policy and legislation in order to enable higher performance at work and better pathways into work for those seeking employment. His particular research and policy areas of interest include employment relations, employee engagement and wellbeing, absence and stress management, and leadership and management capability.

Ben joined the CIPD in 2003. He started his career in regional journalism and prior to joining the CIPD was news editor and employment law editor at Personnel Today magazine.

He has an LLM in Employment law from Kingston University.

Wilson Wong – Head of Insight & Futures 

Wilson Wong

Wilson joined the CIPD’s HR Capability team in August 2012 and leads in the area of psychological contract research, primarily on the construction of organisational fairness and the impact of managing change and organisational cultures. He was senior researcher overseeing research streams of HR and leadership at The Work Foundation. There he applied futures methodologies to support organisational strategic thinking and planning. He was previously at the National IT Council secretariat in Kuala Lumpur where he was an IT Policy Technologist, heading globalisation research. Prior to the NITC, he was AVP at Malaysian Rating, rating corporate debt. He has worked as a research consultant to development agencies and charities, including technology adoption behaviour for SMEs. Recent clients include Barclaycard, Surrey Police, Department of Work and Pensions, Department of Health and Standard Chartered Bank.

He holds a PhD in Economic Psychology (Exon) examining the psychology behind opportunity recognition. He also has a MA in Critical Theory and a MBA in Finance. He was called to the Bar (Middle Temple) in 1990. He is a Fellow of the RSA, and holds Associate positions at the University of Exeter, the Edinburgh Institute and the Centre for Performance-led HR at Lancaster University.

While at Exeter, Wilson was trustee at Exeter Community Initiatives with oversight of BME capacity development projects. He was Chair of the Devon BME Steering Group from 2006-2008, and is currently an active member of the Parochial Church Council at St James’s Piccadilly.

Dianah Worman – Research and Policy Adviser, Diversity 

Dianah Worman

Dianah has worked in the diversity field for over 25 years and has a raft of national-level experience and some at international level. She has been awarded an OBE for her services to diversity.

She leads the CIPD’s research and public policy work on diversity, producing good practice guidance for employers and helping to create a more enabling infrastructure to support diversity progress. Her influencing role includes serving on national-level advisory boards in connection with public policy development and academic research. She is currently focusing her research on producing guidance on managing an ageing workforce and on driving diversity progress in business.

Dianah started her career in the Civil Service and gained experience in the postal and telecommunications industries, later specialising in people management.

Dr Ksenia Zheltoukhova - Research Development Manager 

Ksenia Zheltoukhova

Ksenia is responsible for leading research innovation and capability development at the CIPD. She joined in 2013 as a Research Adviser, leading a number of projects, including a major research programme, Profession for the Future, investigating principles-based approach to professional standards as a way of driving ethical and sustainable decision-making by the business.

Prior to the CIPD, Ksenia was a researcher at The Work Foundation, working on Future of HR, Leadership, and Health and Well-being streams. With a background in organisational psychology, she holds a PhD in Management from Lancaster University, where her research examined the effects of leaders’ sacrificial behaviours on followers.
