Barriers to communication - structuring the message

How we structure a message can have a strong effect on how it is received. It is important to communicate using a medium that is in keeping with the situation; for example, it is not appropriate to post appraisal results on a staff noticeboard. Similarly, messages should be put into context to ensure that the receiver fully understands what is being conveyed, and the language used should be clear and accessible to avoid misinterpretation. It is also important to structure a message to reflect both sides of the issue - starting with the positive if delivering bad news - as we react more constructively if we consider communication to be balanced in its structure.
