Controlling discussions

In any group or team it is likely that there will be members who are willing and eager to talk - sometimes over-eager so that they hog the floor. Equally, there will be others who are quiet and retiring and need to be encouraged to talk. Teams are most successful when everyone contributes. This is a tool you can use during discussion sessions that will encourage everyone to join in. Because it is a timed activity, it encourages the participants to be succinct and the discussion becomes more disciplined and to the point.

Tool aim
  • To control a discussion session by encouraging the quiet ones to speak and the noisy ones to allow others to join in.
