Physical boundaries of communication - proxemic zones

Last Published  01 August 2012

We all have a different set of inbuilt boundaries that tell us how close we should be to people when we are communicating. The trouble is that we often do not realise when we are infringing other people's boundaries. This tool allows people to become aware of this and to adjust their boundaries accordingly. It can be used to lighten the atmosphere after a particularly serious or static session. It is also appropriate to use this before role-plays.

Tool aims
  • To make participants aware of what happens when people are too close or too far away to communicate effectively.
