Team dialogue

This tool encourages team members to communicate in a spirit of genuine curiosity and exploration. It requires them to learn and keep to a couple of 'conversational rules', which promote true collective thinking and inhibit unhelpful position-taking.

Teams will benefit most from this tool when they discover a need to reach a truly shared view - 'alignment' - on one or more issues of importance. If the issues are controversial, it is even more urgent for the team to learn to 'dialogue'.

The facilitator needs to take a very active role in this tool. 'Dialogue' is too different from normal group conversation for teams to be able to do it on their own.
