Dealing with resistance to change

As the new manager starts to cascade goals and objectives, he or she may encounter barriers which prevent people from making progress. This tool, inspired by Kurt Lewin, shows how to employ a simple technique which helps the team to 'remove the rocks from the runway'.

It is highly participative, and so can be used for a wide variety of situations when a manager needs to show people that they can actually influence much more than they realise.

  • To uncover the 'driving forces' and 'restraining forces' to achieving a goal
  • To help managers to develop specific action plans to strengthen the key 'driving forces' and to weaken the key 'restraining forces' to ensure success
