Developing competency interview questions

Last Modified  28 July 2016

Competency-based selection interviewing is well established as a reliable method for establishing aspects of eligibility and suitability. Each competency question is designed to test one or more defined skills. Candidates are asked questions relating to their behaviour in specific circumstances, which they need to back up with examples.

This tool uses a series of short exercises to help participants devise competency-based questions to ensure that they get most out of the short time with the interview candidate. The exercises in the tool are participative and work best in small groups.

Tool aims
  • To introduce participants to competency based interview questions.
  • To help participants devise competency based interview questions.
  • To help particants understand how to mark candidates following a competency based interview.
