Common problems in managing long-term absences

Managers can often face problems when trying to manage long-term absences and support returning employees. The employee may feel anxious about returning to work, and it is important that they feel supported and, at the same time, that they are encouraged to come back to work as soon as possible. Advice may need to be sought from a GP or other specialist, and in some cases, dismissal may eventually be necessary.
