Understanding the issues in managing long-term absences

Before we can look at methods that can be used to reduce absence, we need to understand the key issues that are involved. Unlike with short-term absences, interventions can be made in the case of long-term absences in order to support both the individual and the organisation, and also to reduce costs. Depending on the reason for the absence, advice may need to be sought from outside organisations on how to deal with the situation most effectively.
