Giving feedback

The psychological and sociological barriers to effective communications can all make difficult situations and difficult people more difficult, especially when we have to give feedback. The Johari Window provides a useful model for considering all the dimensions of a situation in order to structure feedback in the most appropriate way. It is also important that any feedback we give, whether positive or negative, is perceived as constructive, and the 'merit and concerns' approach is the appropriate method of giving feedback to people about an issue that could be perceived by them as criticism. Receiving feedback in a constructive way is also an important skill.
