Many organisations are telling their employees that they themselves have the prime responsibility for their development. Also, many employees know that jobs are rarely for life anymore and so they need to develop themselves. Similarly, many managers are told to coach staff more. All of which raises the need to clarify two questions: 'What is development?' and 'How do I know when development has been successful?' The 'added-value' approach is a practical answer to both questions, and, and once they understand it, participants will be better placed to develop both themselves and their staff.
